the silver lining

Is $4+ gallon gasoline getting you down? No? You must not own a car or you have a lot of money. For most working people and families, this is seriously eating into cash flow and even savings. Now I drive a car using biodiesel–you wanna talk expensive fuel? Try $5.39 a gallon and counting. Granted, my car is pretty fuel efficient: about 38 miles per gallon in the city, around 45-50 on the freeway (depending upon how I drive–and I’m quickly becoming a convert to many hypermiling practices). However, I am still riding my bike more and driving less. Last summer’s challenge of making a tank of fuel last as long as possible will be repeated this summer, after my driving trip to California next week.
Even though outrageous fuel prices are troublesome, Time has come up with a list of ten things to like about $4 gas. Check it out! What’s not to like about jobs coming back to the US, cheaper insurance, less obesity, reduced pollution and sprawl among other benefits? And the more we are able to break our addiction to petroleum and dependence on hostile or unstable countries to provide our fix, the better all of these things will become. It gives me hope.
